Partnership for a Cleaner, Greener Blyth
Blyth Town Council is proud to have entered a renewed partnership with Northumberland County Council for the 2025/26 period. This collaboration is focused on enhancing local environmental services — particularly in response to concerns raised by residents last year about weeds and litter in the town.
While Northumberland County Council provides a core level of service across its entire area, Blyth Town Council recognises that our town often requires more frequent attention. That is why we fund additional, targeted services specifically for Blyth — ensuring higher standards of cleanliness throughout the year. This work is supported by a jointly funded, dedicated team assigned exclusively to Blyth, easily recognised by the Blyth Partnership logo, which identifies them as working directly for our community.
For example, Northumberland County Council conducts scheduled weed spraying twice a year (April–September and October). To maintain consistency between these periods, Blyth Town Council funds a dedicated two-person team to continue weed control throughout the summer months (May to August), helping to prevent overgrowth and keep our streets looking cared for.
This partnership also extends to litter management. While Northumberland County Council provides routine bin emptying and litter picking, Blyth Town Council supplements this with funding for more frequent bin servicing and additional litter picks, particularly in busy or high-footfall areas. This ensures our town remains clean, welcoming, and safe for residents and visitors alike.
In addition to weed and litter control, Blyth Town Council also provides funding to Northumberland County Council for the purchase and maintenance of floral displays throughout the town. This includes the vibrant planters seen in various locations and the attractive bedding displays near the bandstand at the beach. The funding supports not only the provision of these plants but also regular watering and upkeep to ensure they remain healthy and colourful throughout the season — enhancing the town’s appearance and contributing to a more pleasant environment for everyone.
The work of the Partnership Team is regularly monitored by Town Council officers, who meet with County Council colleagues to identify any issues and explore improvements. Oversight is provided through a Partnership Working Group, made up of Town and County Councillors and officers, which meets every two months to review service performance and consider future projects.
Together with Northumberland County Council, Blyth Town Council is committed to proactive, responsive environmental care — making Blyth a cleaner, greener place to live.
