Speed Indicator Devices: Helping Make Blyth a Safer Place:

As part of our ongoing commitment to road safety, Blyth Town Council has invested in 17 Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) to help encourage safer driving and reduce vehicle speeds across the town.

These mobile, temporary devices are regularly rotated around key locations — particularly near schools, residential areas, and other zones where speed awareness is essential. The signs detect and display real-time vehicle speeds, providing drivers with a clear visual reminder to slow down when needed.

But SIDs do more than just display speeds. Each device collects important data every month — including traffic volumes, average speeds, and the number of speeding incidents. This information is downloaded monthly and shared with Northumbria Police and other relevant agencies to support enforcement action and help make evidence-based decisions about road safety.

To keep residents informed, a monthly speed data table from each location will be available to view on this page. These reports help show where and how the SIDs are making a difference.

By identifying speeding hotspots and monitoring trends over time, the SIDs play a key role in our wider mission to create a safer, calmer environment for everyone in Blyth. We appreciate all road users who do their part by driving responsibly — together, we are working to make Blyth a safer place to live, work, and visit.

Drivers caught speeding can also suffer in many ways e.g. shame and embarrassment, points on a driving licence, fines, additional insurance premiums or disqualification.
