Read moreBlyth is a beautiful coastal town with important stories to tell about local heroes, national industries and international connections.
In its industrial prime during the early 20th century, Blyth was a centre for the shipbuilding industry and home to six collieries within its 19.1 square kilometre boundaries. It is said that in 1961 Blyth was the busiest port in England, shipping over six million tons of coal per year from the neighbouring coal mines. There are many stories of the pits and those who worked in and sometimes gave their lives to them.
Search for Robert Olly’s sculpture of a miner with two young miners or the plans for the Cowpen Colliery Workmen’s Institute.
Today, Blyth looks to the future with renewable energy projects, including Blyth Offshore Wind Farm whose 2 megawatts turbines were the largest in the world when they were installed in 2000.
The civic history of Blyth demonstrates our values of democracy and friendship. Blyth is twinned with Solingen and Ratingen in Germany and our collection boasts some wonderful artefacts and memories from their long partnership as twinned towns.
Search for Ratingen’s Dumeklemmer Brunnen fountain or the knife gifted by Solingen, known as the “City of Blades”. The list of the succession of mayors over eight decades and some of their robes and chains of office can also be found.
Blyth has always welcomed adventure and service on – and under - the seas. The Antarctic Peninsula was discovered in 1819 by Blyth seaman Captain William Smith (who was disbelieved by the naval authorities) - he is commemorated in our heritage trail. We have many artefacts relating to Blyth’s distinguished maritime history to explore.
Search for HMS Blyth to learn more about its adoption during Warship Week 1942 or view the crests of the many ships and submarines linked to Blyth.
