Blyth is set for a week of spooky fun, creativity and family entertainment this half term culminating in the town’s annual fireworks extravaganza on Saturday, October 31.

Blyth Town Council is bringing Halloween to life as part of Blyth Celebrates, with a packed programme of free family activities taking place throughout half term before the week reaches its grand finale with two spectacular firework displays at Mermaid Car Park.

The Halloween celebrations at the Market Pavilion will combine the traditional spooky fun of Halloween with fun craft activities. Throughout the week, children and families will be able to drop in and get creative with a range of arts and crafts activities.

A giant spooky creation will also take shape during the week, with families encouraged to get involved and help build and decorate it.

On Friday, October 30 there will be a colourful and slightly spooky community parade featuring costumed dancers, music and a themed parade around the Marketplace at 3pm.

And then it is time for the big one; Blyth’s annual fireworks extravaganza at Mermaid Car Park.

This year, Blyth Town Council has introduced two separate firework displays, designed to make the event more accessible to families while also helping to reduce congestion.

The first display will take place at 6pm and will feature low-noise fireworks, making it particularly suitable for young children, people with sensory difficulties and those who prefer a quieter experience.

There will be plenty to keep visitors entertained, with a funfair, food stalls and a special spooky Disco with Halloween characters from 4.00pm outside the Dave Stephens area adding to the Halloween atmosphere.

The early timings means families with younger children can enjoy the funfair, disco and food before the fireworks heading home afterwards.   

Food traders will be serving up a tempting selection of treats, including doughnuts, fried chicken, pizza and delicious hot chocolate.

For those wanting the full traditional fireworks experience, the second display will begin at 7.30pm, featuring a spectacular firework show to bring Halloween night in Blyth to a memorable close.

“We wanted to make this year’s Halloween celebrations about much more than just one night,” said Julie Summers of Blyth Town Council.

“By bringing together a whole week of creative activities, crafts, music, a community parade and then the fireworks, we are giving families plenty of opportunities to get involved and enjoy Halloween together.

“The early low-noise display is particularly important because it means younger children and people who may find loud fireworks difficult can enjoy the experience too, while the later display will provide the traditional fireworks extravaganza that people have come to expect. The two shows combined will be the same length as previous shows, lessening the overall impact from loud Fireworks,

“It should be a fantastic week for Blyth and a great way to bring the community together.”

All activities are family-friendly and free.

For public safety, there will be no onsite parking at Mermaid Car Park, which will be fully closed from 4pm on October 31.

Visitors are asked not to park on verges, junctions or in residential areas, with civil enforcement officers on patrol.

People attending the fireworks are encouraged to arrive early and use public transport wherever possible and look out for information on additional services provided and updated timetables.

The following weekend will see the Remembrance services at Cowpen, Newsham and Ridley Park Memorials, all information can be found on the Town Councils website along with information for the upcoming Christmas Lights event on Saturday 21st November.
