Construction of New Skate Park at Ogle Drive Set to Begin
Blyth Town Council is excited to announce that the construction of a new state-of-the-art skate park at Ogle Drive will commence next week. Contractors from Wheelscape Ltd. are scheduled to arrive on-site early to begin pre-installation work, with full construction expected to follow shortly. The entire project is anticipated to take approximately 12 weeks.
Designed in collaboration with Wheelscape Ltd. and local skateboarding consultants Shred The North, the facility will cater to a wide range of ages and skill levels. Whether new to skateboarding or an experienced skater, users will find a space suited to their abilities.
Wheelscape Ltd., known for their expertise in skate park design and construction, teamed up with Shred The North to ensure the new park meets the council’s vision. The aim is to provide a modern leisure facility that promotes both the physical and social benefits of skateboarding while avoiding common challenges often associated with skate parks.
Elliot Hamilton, on behalf of Wheelscape commented, "Rather than produce another ‘all-in-one’ park that can invite collisions and compromises, Wheelscape and STN made a fresh start, sketching a layout with separate age-and-stage appropriate zones. We know that this concept will be safer, more social, more inclusive and more beautiful than any diluted ‘one size fits all’ skatepark now so common in the UK. We know that for many children, a trip to the park relies on parents choosing to take them there so each area of the park is linked via a central social area, offering 360-degree views and a comfy place to relax; particularly helpful when monitoring several children of different ages using different zones. This is a concept that works as well for seasoned skaters as for first timers on a scooter; is as comfortable for spectators as for active participants and, with a unique yet site sensitive aesthetic, has the potential to become a source of pride in Blyth. We hope the design will serve as a blueprint for further parks in the North East which, traditionally, has been a black spot for these provisions. Huge props must go to STN and the Council for their vision, and for supporting such a creative, unique design".
Mayor of Blyth, Councillor Aileen Barrass, expressed enthusiasm for the project: “We are thrilled to see the skate park at Ogle Drive moving forward. This new facility will be a fantastic addition to the community, offering a safe, inclusive space where people of all ages and abilities can come together and enjoy skateboarding. It highlights our commitment to enhancing leisure facilities in Blyth, while also promoting healthy, active lifestyles for our residents.”
To celebrate the project’s progress, Blyth Town Council has partnered with Shred The North’s Pop More Skate School to offer FREE skateboarding taster sessions for children at the Isabella Centre during September and October.
Stay tuned for updates as we build this exciting new facility for the community!
