Burn Period Opens

Fires are permitted on allotment sites from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027.
Tenants must still be careful not to create a danger or a nuisance through fires.
- Avoid using accelerants such as petrol, diesel, or methylated spirits.
- Position the bonfire far from structures, plants, and trees. Always check for hibernating animals before lighting.
- Never leave a bonfire unattended and have an extinguisher or water on hand to manage the fire if it becomes unmanageable.
- Always ensure the fire is completely out before leaving the site
- Never burn household waste, plastic, rubber, or any materials that emit harmful fumes.
- Only small amounts of dry garden waste should be burned. Avoid burning wet, damp, or moist materials.
- Check air quality before lighting a bonfire-use the air quality service at 0800 556677 or visit the UK Air website.
- Only burn organic matter from your plot-do not bring waste from elsewhere.
- Use an incinerator, if possible, to minimize smoke and pollution.
Statutory nuisances should be reported to Northumberland County Council's public protection team.
