PUBLIC INVITATION

Blyth Town Council is inviting residents and members of the public to join the Mayor of Blyth for the unveiling of a new Blue Plaque at North Farm Miners’ Memorial Garden.

The unveiling will take place on Thursday 1 October 2026 at 2:30pm at the memorial garden, located at the corner of Temple Avenue and Walton Avenue, Blyth.

A new blue plaque and information lectern have been installed to recognise the area’s mining heritage and the generations of miners who lived in North Farm and travelled the pathway to and from Bates Colliery.

The plaque recognises the miners who travelled this route, many of whom lost their lives or suffered illnesses as a result of their work underground. The new information lectern will provide residents and visitors with further information about the history of the memorial garden and its significance to the local community.

The memorial garden itself is the result of a community project initiated by the North Farm Residents and Community Association, which was established in 2001. The project began following the involvement of local young people in a gardening club led by resident Isobel Foster, with the community subsequently fundraising for the design, commissioning and installation of the statue.

Members of the public are warmly invited to attend.
