Blyth Town Council launches consultation on inclusive play

Council News Blyth Town News County News Public Noticeboard

Blyth Town Council, in partnership with the Northumberland Parent Carer Forum, is inviting children, young people, and families to share their views on play spaces across the town.

The eight-week consultation, running from Monday 23 March to mid May, will gather feedback on how accessible and inclusive local play areas are, and what improvements could be made. The findings will help shape plans for a new inclusive play area, designed to welcome children of all ages, abilities, and needs by 2027.

Families can take part via an online survey, in-person engagement events, or a Parent Panel, where volunteer parent carers can share their experiences directly with councillors and officers. The consultation will explore how children and families use play spaces, barriers to inclusion, and priorities for future improvements.

Public engagement events include:

  • Easter Engagement: Saturday 4 April, 11am–3pm at Ridley Park. Families can share their views while enjoying seasonal activities.
  • Community Drop-in: Friday 17 April, 11am–3pm at Blyth Market Pavilion, offering residents a chance to speak directly with Parent Carer Forum representatives.

Cllr David Swinhoe, Mayor of Blyth, said:

“The council recognises that play should be accessible and enjoyable for every child. This consultation is an important step in listening to families and learning from their experiences. By working closely with the Northumberland Parent Carer Forum and the community, we can ensure future play spaces in Blyth are welcoming, inclusive, and designed around the real needs of the children and families who use them.”

Gemma from the Northumberland Parent Carer Forum added:

“Many families tell us that local play spaces don’t always meet their children’s needs. This consultation gives parent carers and young people the chance to share their lived experiences and help shape play spaces that truly meet children’s needs.”

The final report, combining survey responses, engagement events, and Parent Panel insights, will be presented to Blyth Town Council to guide the design and development of the town’s next generation of inclusive play facilities.
