Blyth Town Council Sets Precept for 2026–27

Blyth Town Council has approved its budget and precept for the 2026–27 financial year, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining essential local services while ensuring financial stability.
At the Council meeting held on 15 January 2026, councillors approved a budget of £1,590,373 and agreed to set a precept of £1,526,573. The modest 2% increase in the precept equates to an additional £2.71 per year for Band D households or £1.81 per year for Band A households. The remaining balance of £63,800 will be met through a contribution from council reserves.
The precept represents the Town Council’s funding request to Northumberland County Council and will appear as a separate item on residents’ Council Tax bills, alongside the charges for Northumberland County Council and the Northumberland Police and Crime Commissioner. This funding enables the Town Council to sustain key community initiatives and deliver vital local services.
Environment Committee
Enhancing Local Environment and Services
Following the success of last year’s weed control measures through our enhanced partnership with Northumberland County Council (NCC), we have agreed to introduce a third cycle in response to community feedback. These three cycles are in addition to the core weed control programme delivered by NCC and are expected to significantly improve the town’s appearance.
The Council will also continue to invest in its enhanced partnership which provides additional services including:
- Increased street cleansing and more frequent litter bin emptying
- Provision and upkeep of floral displays across the town
- Monthly bus shelter cleaning
- Strimming and grass cutting across our play areas
Investing in Inclusive Play and Community Spaces
Blyth Town Council has confirmed its commitment to developing an improved, inclusive play area, alongside a comprehensive review of accessibility and inclusiveness across all existing play facilities. A community consultation will take place soon to gather residents’ views and we will be working closely with the Northumberland Parent Carer Forum on this.
Community Development Committee
Continued Support for Popular Annual Events
Through the Community Development Committee, the Council has reaffirmed its continued support for its popular annual events programme, which plays a significant role in bringing the community together, supporting local businesses, and promoting Blyth as a vibrant place to live and visit. From Blyth Live to family-friendly and seasonal activities, the programme is designed to offer opportunities for residents of all ages to enjoy high-quality cultural and community experiences close to home.
Governance Committee
A Commitment to Value and Quality
The Governance Committee continues its oversight and scrutiny role, prioritising responsible economic management for the Council. This involves looking carefully at budgets, forward projections and financial modelling regarding reserves, service implications, and medium-term sustainability.
Mayor David Swinhoe added, “We are pleased to be able to keep our costs low for our residents this year, ensuring we continue to invest in our town’s essential services.”
