Improving road safety and tackling speeding

Blyth Town Council is committed to improving road safety and tackling speeding across the town through the continued use of Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs). These devices play an important role in reminding drivers of their speed, encouraging safer driving behaviour and helping to protect residents, pedestrians and other road users.
The Council has installed SIDs at key locations around Blyth where speeding has been identified as a concern. By providing real-time feedback to motorists, the devices have proven effective in raising awareness and reducing excessive speeds in residential and high-footfall areas. To ensure the SIDs remain reliable and effective, the Council’s General Services Team carries out weekly inspections. This includes routine checks and the replacement of batteries as required. The use of battery-powered units, rather than hard-wired systems, offers significant flexibility.
It allows the Council to move the devices easily to different locations based on emerging needs, community feedback or changes in traffic patterns.
This adaptable approach ensures that resources are used efficiently while maintaining a strong focus on public safety. The speed sensor data is downloaded regularly and shared with Northumbria Police end other relevant agencies to support enforcement action and help make evidence-based decisions about road safety.
The data is also accessible to the public and is uploaded monthly to our website.
